Tip before tax vs after tax
Tip on pre-tax amount (commonly used): multiply the food and drink subtotal by your tip percentage. Tax is added separately. The calculator labels this clearly as Tip on pre-tax amount.
Tip on after-tax amount: multiply bill + tax by the tip percentage. This produces a slightly larger tip and is handy when your receipt only shows a final total clearly. The calculator labels this as Tip on after-tax amount.
There is no single universally correct method — both are personal choices.
How tip and tax add up
Worked example with an $80 bill, 8% tax, and 20% tip:
Tip before tax
- Tax: $80 × 0.08 = $6.40
- Tip: $80 × 0.20 = $16.00 (on pre-tax $80)
- Total: $80 + $6.40 + $16.00 = $102.40
Tip after tax
- Tax: $80 × 0.08 = $6.40
- Tip base: $80 + $6.40 = $86.40
- Tip: $86.40 × 0.20 = $17.28
- Total: $80 + $6.40 + $17.28 = $103.68
Difference: $1.28 more tip when calculated after tax on this example.
